The Two Sides of Man

A poem about what is inside some of us.

In a time like none other in history, those on this path don't understand

We're all facing the dark days that will forever leave us tested

Terrifying days and darker nights that only the toughest can withstand

During the struggles we all face, do not forget it's our hearts that are bested

-

Walk not alone through this lonely and gloomy world of ours

For man as a solitary creature, he is not meant to be

Feel the loss of all your powers

And tell others of the pains suffered that they did not see

-

Life is never fair to those who are the nicest of all

Hardships and suffering surround them in numbers unseen

For those poor souls who feel like they have already had to fall

They are the dangerous ones who no longer feel the promise of a dream

-

Love has not found them like so many of their friends

They grin and continue to walk in a world so alone

Deep inside them, they beg to meet their ends

The demons inside their hearts are the only constants that they've known

-

Even those who should love them have often forgotten their story

Most don't want to think about anything so scary

Lives filled with such struggle often have thoughts too gory

Most can't imagine an existence so contrary

-

None would know of pillows covered in the tears of the dammed

For they carry their nightmares silently through time

But to look upon a life so jammed

They'll freely say they're glad that life "Wasn't mine."

-

You can feel no sympathy for those who do not ask

For it was the life they chose to live

Think not of questionable acts they've done in the past

And thank them for the souls that they did give

-

But be mindful of those with no eye on hope

And pray that it is not you that this will ever be

Very few meet a life like this and still cope

But they are the most dangerous of us you'll ever see

Once when I was in college, one of the star football players told a prospective student he was showing around that I was the scariest person on campus. Do I take it that now I am also the most dangerous?
