The Things That Impress Me

Can’t be bought

By Colleen WaltersPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 1 min read

Have I said too much?

Or have I said enough…

Have I lived too much?

Or have I lived enough…

Have I loved too much?

Or have I loved enough…

Will I find the words

when I need them,

spilling from my soul

like shredded ribbons.

Or an I too much?

Am I enough…

A fractured heart,

The blood has dried,

A scab has formed,

Healing from the inside

out,

Comes now the world,

Frenzied by the blood scent,

Now enthralled by

the scent of a woman.

Vying for a touch

Of her skin, tracing her lips

In lurid dreams,

Plotting the carnal conquest

With eager hands and

Words like diluted honey.

So many different tactics

For a prize like no other.

Now comes the parade of

Hopeful contestants,

Strutting like peacocks

In a petting zoo.

Wait, what?!?!

You’re trying to impress me?

With material things,

Money, boats, booze

And the like?

That don’t impress me much…

I’m a free spirit.

Independent,

Capable.

I don’t need your money,

Or your seduction attempts,

Or your peacock displays.

My spirit belongs

in a higher dimension,

Where souls fly

with freedom and joy

Someday,

someone

somewhere

will quietly

pray to God

for someone

like me,

Tether my heart,

To set it free.

Time to go, dear…

The petting zoo

Called and said

They’re missing

a peacock.
