The Spider & The Man

A contemplative poem about spider eyes

I am enraptured by the eight fallen stars caught in your eyes

The way I was once captivated by the fathomless black of my hatred.

In the dark, against the pavement, your drusy eyes glitter up at me.

.

At me.

.

Not the towering trees whipping in the wind nor the dog running past,

But at me, the creature caught in my own mesmerizing web of curiosity.

The Milky Way dances above but you look only at me with those big eyes.

.

Doe eyes.

.

Soft with a childlike wonder, soft with the innocence of wanting to know,

Soft with a recognizable gentleness of the soul that I've seen in the mirror.

Unblinking, unafraid, unwilling to be anything but interested, you stare.

.

And I stare back.

.

Because I couldn't fathom before this glittering night that you too wept

Inside the depths of your soul at the strange differences this universe

Served to you in the depths of its kind eyes, glittering down from above.

.

At us.

Amazing piece, Silver! I love how you captured the scope and awe of the universe within the context of a spider. Even that opening line had my jaw on the floor (Eight fallen stars caught in your eyes...) The structure of the piece was also really unique. The italicized text between stanzas, representing your internal voice, added to how immersive the piece felt. This is only the second piece of yours that I've read, but I think it's fair to say I'm a big fan. Looking forward to checking out more!

So good. I have a jumping spider and every time I stare into his eyes I think all the things you wrote above. Way to capture the cobwebs in my heart

I loved this shared awareness of the world. I often wonder about how things look to others, human and otherwise. I liked the way that a connection is established in this poem, with the background of the universe and its celestial brightness making it seem eternal, mystical, unfathomable.
