The Space Between Thoughts
Exploring the depths of our understanding
For some time now,
a roof of wisdom had grown over her head.
It sheltered her from many storms that spread,
sometimes even from the biting cold
and the slow drip of Chinese water torture;
so bold indeed to be her.
She no longer felt the urge
to contradict a different point of view,
even when it felt strange and askew,
it was a new kind of crookedness, too.
Somehow, her perspective had shifted.
curiosity within her had lifted.
She sought to understand the roots more deeply
from which expressions of another’s mind
might creep.
No longer afraid to think with grace,
drawing from the depths of her neural space,
she wanted to be there, all of herself,
to explore and discover those feelings of old,
when she wasn’t just agreeing to what she was told.
A beautiful new world to behold!
She often met those who lived in fear,
who kept their minds closed, unwilling to hear,
clinging to ideas that fluttered like sparrows,
straight from the pages of books — seemingly neutral —
but dangerous like sharp stinging arrows.

Author’s note: In this poem, I explore my journey of self-growth and the power of curiosity that resides in each of us, humans. I wanted to show some balance between being open-minded and closed-minded, how our views can change when and if we agree to explore new ideas. As we think about understanding different perspectives and the courage it takes to question what we’ve always believed, we might meet people who keep to their old and familiar ideas out of fear.
True wisdom is about daring to explore, too ask questions, and grow. I hope my poem encourages you to reflect on your journey. Try to be more curious in this amazing world full of possibilities.

Wonderful poem
I consider it a green flag indicating strong character when someone sheds a closely held belief and says, "ok, I was wrong."
Beautiful poem!
Amazing.
Wonderful self-exploration in verse. Loved it. Great choice of illustration too. Augustus Leopold Egg, The Travelling Companions, 1862, Birmingham (England) Museum and Art. I have no seen it before. Seems to be a study of symmetry, similarity and difference.
The sentiment behind this poem and the person who wrote it just made the world a better place. *Whispering* Do it again. 😊

This is a lyrical account of the often painful and puzzling transition from naive obedience to bold, independent inquiry. I think many of my students would benefit from reading it!
