The sky shattered

A poem

The sky shattered with thunder

As he uttered his prayer

Spent, he fell on his knees

As if struck by an arrow

The rain drowning his sorrow

His hopes destroyed, he felt hollow

Inside a pain so deep and agonizing

Was twisting his bone marrow

His arms shaking and aching

He whispered a strangled “Why?”

That was swallowed by the thunder’s roaring

As he kneeled on the soil and wept

Wondering what was the point of continuing

When he felt so incompetent, so inept

When everyone and everything was gone

How was he to rebuild his life anew

Shards of broken dreams pierced his heart’s sinew

The rain poured harder, as suffocating as his grief

The sea looked inviting from the edge of the cliff

Promising to take away his despair and bring relief

As he looked at the unbridled sea

He saw a small boat among the raging waves

Fighting to stay afloat valiantly

Its white sails perduring bravely

Blinded by the rain, he wiped his eyes

And the boat disappeared from his vision

His heart pounding, he prayed it was alright

He looked and searched until he spotted it glide to the shore

He let out his breath, feeling alive again

He looked down the cliff and realized

He still had a long way to go

Before he was allowed to call it quit
