The Shadow of Doubt

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 18 hours ago 1 min read

Verse 1

There’s a chill that moves behind me

When the night gets too quiet to bear.

It don’t speak in words or warnings,

Just a whisper hangin’ in the air.

I’ve tried to outrun its footsteps,

Tried to drown it out with prayer and sound,

But it rises up like fog at dawn,

Always waitin’ to circle ’round.

Chorus

Why’s it called the shadow of doubt?

’Cause it follows you when the lights go out.

It don’t strike hard, it don’t scream loud—

It just lingers like a ghost you never talk about.

It clings to the corners of your mind

Where the truth can’t quite get in.

That’s why they call it the shadow of doubt—

It’s the darkness beneath your skin.

Verse 2

It knows the cracks in your story,

The places you don’t let folks see.

It slips its hand through the smallest opening

And asks, “What if you’re not who you think you’ll be?”

It don’t need proof or reason,

Just a moment when your guard is down.

And suddenly every certainty

Starts shakin’ like a haunted house.

Bridge

But shadows only live where light is,

And fear only grows where hope’s been.

Maybe doubt ain’t here to break us—

Maybe it’s here to draw us in.

Final Chorus

Why’s it called the shadow of doubt?

’Cause it shows up when the truth’s in drought.

It don’t steal faith, it just casts doubt—

A reminder of the light we can’t live without.

And when the dawn finally finds your face,

You see what it was all about.

That’s why they call it the shadow of doubt—

It fades when the truth steps out.
