The Saddest Goodbye

A Poem of Letting Go

The saddest goodbye is never professed out loud

Is not a final passionate kiss or melodramatic parting

The tightness in your chest when toneless words grip your heart

The iron-clad ball of pain resting in the deep end of your gut

Empty promises and hollow words floating in slow motion

The waiting-forever waiting-to be chosen-still waiting

Knowing reality is the distance between what you hoped for and what is given

Holding on tighter when all efforts feel worthless

The expectation of all your time, paid for with your body and tears

Arriving, fully present in every ecstatic moment, uniting in an other-wordly collision of passion and promise of a future together which never arrives

Letting go in quiet moments without a witness of your pain

Holding back words, restricted in your throat-a timeless connection slowly dying

The saddest goodbye-

is no goodbye at all…
