The Rise and Fall of Potential

A sunset always makes me cry

With the sun, I let our potential fade

I wish I’d let us shine

Now I’m living in eternal shade

It would’ve been nice if hope had stayed

I’d have loved to make you mine

With the sun, I let our potential fade

Wondering if something I could have said would have swayed

We could be better than just “fine”

Now I’m living in eternal shade

If only my demons had been slayed

Impaled on a pitch fork’s tine

With the sun, I let our potential fade

Looking from the outside, I see my body splayed

They say all good things end with time

Now I’m living in eternal shade

Wish our future was the one my mind had made

If only we’d headed the signs

With the sun, I let our potential fade

Now I’m living in eternal shade
