A Lament

We emerged, outliers all, from a cold embrace

In silence we dragged ourselves, forlorn, and numb

To our common humanity, through sweat and ire, we face

our newfound fears, and to this hellish nightmare we succumb

He separated us, friend and foe

And sauntering, told us who was boss

The tyrant’s eyes fell, his men all there in tow

Knowing none could take another loss

The leader rose, violence his breath

And surplus ignorance his name

His echoed orders meaning life or death

Begs and shouts for forgiveness, forgotten all the same

His dragons, demons leapt at one of my own

Not a brother, but still a trusted friend no less

I looked into his eyes, and hell, they shown

The horror I had seen in all the rest

With my last breath I couldn’t help but hear

His cries and yells among all this obscene

Filth and smut from the republic of fear

and imagine him thrown away, sight unseen.
