I have witnessed many dying with a smile or a frown.
Guess who gets the best treatment when in the hospital gown.
~
I have heard the angry mutterings of not having enough
most often from those who resent feeling that life has been rough.
Their glass is half empty, tasteless and makes them feel numb.
Others drink from the vessel where life brims over with the chance of fun.
~
Some who have known days when the world is black
make the effort and are able to select the best cards to stack.
The dark of pain, distrust, and disappointment
is not easily repaired with some topical ointment.
It will not go away and is best avoided,
by having no room for being exploited.
~
So, top up that glass with all the light you can find
so darkness has no way to become rooted and entwined.
The prickly plant inside still grows
but it's beauty will adapt and easily shows.

I don't know how I missed this one, but thanks to Paul announcing the winners for their unofficial challenge, now I got to read it. And I'm so glad I did! Congrats on winning the challenge by the way!

I really enjoyed this Katherine. I like that the prickles are there but make a great case for trying to see the good. Thank you for entering. I'm finally reading through the entries and will consult with my coconspirator and will have the results during the week I suspect.
A delightfully uplifting poem… especially like: “ I have witnessed many dying with a smile or a frown. Guess who gets the best treatment when in the hospital gown.”💖
This is quite a slice of life, Katherine. Comparing the jolly with the grump is an excellent strategy. Your two opening lines are brilliant. Very proverbesque. I loved it!
Clever rhymes throughout that flowed with precision. Nice entry!
I especially loved your last stanza! Such a wonderful poem!
