The Philosopher in a Fur Coat
Lessons from a Good Dog

He wags his tail for breakfast,
He wags his tail for tea,
He finds a simple, happy joy,
In everything he sees.
He doesn't hold a grudge at all,
If you are cross or late,
He'll just present his favorite ball,
And wipe the slate plate clean and straight.
He knows the art of napping,
In a sunny, golden square,
And understands that happy yapping,
Can dissolve the deepest care.
He does not worry what he owns,
Or if his collar's out of style,
He's happy just to chew his bones,
And walk his favorite mile.
He teaches us to live right now,
To chase the breeze, to feel the sun,
To make a new, enthusiastic vow,
That life is meant for fun.
And when the day is over,
And the shadows start to creep,
He'll sigh and come right over,
And guard you while you sleep.
So if you ever wonder,
What this life is really for,
Just watch a happy, tail-thump wonder,
Go padding 'cross the floor.
For all the wisdom humans seek,
In volumes thick and deep,
Is practiced weekly, day and week,
By a good dog, fast asleep.
