A grass field under the red-hot sun.

The wind blowing tenderly, carrying the scent of sweet flowers and berries.

Two men stand, backs pressing against each other’s; arms trembling; hearts racing; death awaiting.

The scorching sun, soaking them.

Their shirts sticking to their backs; sweat rolling down their face; the taste of salt on their lips.

An anxious, restless young woman witnessing.

A last attempt at an agreement fading.

The third man present bellows what must be done.

The men step away from one another; stepping on the third man's rhythmic count.

"One..."

"Two..."

...

"TEN!"

An about-face; arms extending; death in their hands.

A deafening sound comes forth.

A cloud of smoke blinding the spectators.

Men laying in meadows; painting the grass crimson.

An agonizing scream; the young woman crumbling to her knees; her heart shattered, beyond repair.

Both gone.

Extinct.

A casualty of men's ego.

The first man she ever loved.

The love of her life.
