The Other Woman

The Other Woman painting by Uldis Klavins

Greetings to the other woman,

Greetings from his broken wife.

Did you ever think about me,

When you tore apart my life?

Yes, I know it’s not just your fault;

All of us must share the blame.

All those times I took for granted,

All those memories down the drain.

Did he tell you that he loved you,

Couldn’t bear to be apart?

Make you think that ‘we’ were over,

That you couldn’t break my heart?

Did you plan a life together?

A world without me in the way.

Did you think he’d stay forever?

Maybe marry you some day?

Sorry that I found those emails,

Read those words you wrote to him.

More sorry than you imagine

That his heart was yours to win.

Now he says that it’s all over,

Your affair is at an end.

But a plate, once dropped, is shattered.

Like that plate, my heart won’t mend.

Maybe sometimes you feel guilty,

That your romance caused such pain.

Maybe next time you’ll think twice

Before you wreck a home again.

Greetings to his pretty lover,

Greetings from his age-worn wife.

Mother to his frightened children,

My body scarred to bring them life.

Did you think I’d give him over?

Demand divorce and lock the door?

For 24 years I have loved him,

Been his best friend, been his whore.

Nothing in this life is easy,

Half a lifetime up in flames.

How come though he broke our marriage,

I’m the one he always blames?

Every day I pray it’s over,

That I’ll wake up from this pain.

Then I catch him check his cellphone

And it breaks my heart again.

I hoped I could win his love back,

But I am his one regret.

Now how do I live without him,

How am I meant to forget?

So goodbye to the other woman,

Goodbye to this whole charade.

Farewell to the man I’d die for,

Farewell to this mess you made.
