"The Ones & the Twos"
(This Second Chance, So Late in Life)

One & Done
Hard times land
with a heavy hand.
Sapping our strengths, and
bending our backs
to untenable lengths.
One and done,
Whether I’ve lost or won.
Running my race
with blinders on.
I awaken with the dawn
And the knowledge that you’re gone.
A potter’s field Carmelite
Denied a plot to pray upon.
One and done,
Whether I’ve lost or won.
Running my race
with blinders on.
One and done,
Whether I’ve lost or won.
Never could keep the pace,
So, I played the long con.
One and done,
Whether I’ve lost or won.
Won’t let tomorrow's sundown,
Ground today’s rising sun.
One and done,
Whether lost or won.
Let bygones be bygone,
Shut the door on them, Son.
This Second Chance
Me, a rambling man,
a gambling man,
overplayed my hand,
again and again.
Each new day dawning
only serves to remind me,
many lay behind me,
few wait to find me.
You, tender as a lover,
forsaking any other,
still, your comfort found comfort
in the arms of another.
Nothing noble about,
serving time as a spouse.
Made a martyr by a vow,
made a haunt in your own house.
Though not how we planned it,
Don’t take this for granted.
This happenstance
Sadie Hawkins dance,
This 11th-hour second chance…
