The One I didn’t Hear From

On Fathers Day.

My son, my first, didn’t call today.

I sat around and cried, dismayed.

Until photos of times that long had passed,

an album, his life, lay on my lap.

A lesson I’d taught him along the way,

boomeranged back and my pain allayed.

“When life offends

or you’re emotionally weighed,

or the world gives you lemons,

make lemonade.

Look to the sky, to the heavens above.

Forgive, forget, and focus on love.

Our time on this earth is far too short

to let any one thing our joy distort.”

He is physically gone.

I can’t touch his face.

But I see him, he’s here,

just beyond my gaze.

My son, from heaven, didn’t call today.

Instead a lesson, from the stars conveyed.

What more could I ask this Father’s Day?
