the numbers

a poem by ansel tan

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

(daydream)

the darkness, the sunrise, the coffee.

(daydream)

laughing, collapsing, floating.

(daydream)

the eyes, the freckles, the smile.

(daydream)

wake up.

(focus)

she isn’t looking.

(focus)

don’t get distracted.

(focus)

nothing so childish.

(focus)

maybe a little smile.

(breathe)

don’t make it obvious.

(breathe)

keep your eyes straight.

(breathe)

stop trembling.

(breathe)

say something.

(think)

it’s been awhile.

(think)

i love this.

(think)

you captivate me.

(think)

do you feel the same?

daydreaming

of roaring diesel engines.

daydreaming

of bright, glowing skies.

daydreaming

of glimmering string lights.

daydreaming

of you.

how is it you make me feel this way

with all your smiles and waves that cast my fears away?

you’re an absolute daydream, and in you, i’m lost

in eyes agleam, in a heart unseen.

is it cause for concern?

perhaps one day, it’ll be our turn.

but for now, you know

us daydreamers, (we never learn)

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

(one, two, three)

love poems
