The notes that fly in between

Impactful yet not always seen

By Sherie RamosPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

The melodies and harmonies of music were born to entice and reside on center stage,

But take a moment to tune in to the smaller notes in between- observe them, and engage.

Generally ignored but intentionally masked, thought of as mere spaces to fill,

These are notes that gently move the music… but on their own, seem to stand still.

Binding the tune together like a thread, they’re placed in perfect position,

To be the through line that connects it all, to be the areas of transition.

On a more personal note, I had a grandmother who passed away 11 years ago,

She was incredibly special to me and I think of her often, especially when I’m feeling low.

I associate her with a monarch butterfly, so colorful, free, complex, and bright,

And when I had one of the worst days at work, one fluttered in to the corner wall as I closed shop at night.

In that moment I felt warmth and comfort, as she made herself obscure yet seen,

That was a moment that wasn’t life changing, yet a moment in between.

Life in general follows the same cadence as a beautifully crafted song,

The larger, more pronounced moments are the ones we naturally put a heavy emphasis on.

Because those moments are the ones that build our foundation, in happiness and in strife,

But it is the moments in between the significant events that add rhythm and color to a life.
