The Moon

A poem celebrating the beauties of our mysterious celestial neighbour.

Lockdown gave me chance, and the inclination, if I'm honest, to really look at our night sky.

This May has been disappointing; but last May, over lockdown, I spent up to an hour each night simply sitting on a deckchair, looking up to the clear night sky. For the first time in my life, I saw shooting stars, satellites, and I also really began to appreciate the mysterious beauty of our moon.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock's documentary on our moon really inspired me to look closer. We have had some spectacular full moons, and their names are equally as wonderful: 'the Hare Moon', 'the Snow Moon', 'the Cold Moon', 'the Wolf Moon'.

I enjoy exploring what I see through poetry, and so I wrote this. I hope you enjoy it, and that it inspires you to draw, write about, or simply observe her on a clear night.

The Moon

A mysterious celestial disc.

She was up there all day,

in the cold, bright, blue January sky.

Almost full, she kept a small portion in shadow.

A pained or euphoric face, made in the

shadows and depths of her rock.

She pulls tides of water, and emotions.

A mysterious celestial disc.

A friend. An enigma. A force.

About the Creator

Deborah Robinson

I'm new to the 'writing for real' scene. Previously, I've kept my poetry and writing under wraps in a fancy notebook, but now I've decided to give it a proper go!

I hope you enjoy my work.

Thanks, Deborah.
