The Moments Between

This is my entry to Jazzy Gonçalves's 'Perfect' challenge.

"The Challenge is as follows;

Write a poem about the perfect day, or morning or evening, or perfect whatever.

Include your senses, such as sight, smell, and taste.

Use words that describe the scene so we can experience the day as you would want to experience it."

Birds -

It starts with birds, singing in the near distance,

and an alarm,

not jarring but gently rousing.

Like the delicate, cool hand of a grandmother,

pressing on a smooth, untroubled brow,

'wake up'

The roads are clear and clean,

they soak up the sun,

letting the nights moisture go with a sigh.

And I enjoy the moments between 'now' and 'then'.

Between the feel of the wheel under my hands,

and the first exertion of the day.

And when both are gone,

there will be crumbs in the bottom of the plate,

and foam clinging to the inside of a glass,

and the uncertainty of how much time has passed.

But the sun will track the time better than I -

and the roads will stretch out again,

winding out of of the rough-shaped stone byways to greener grounds.

And the sweet sounds of the same little birds,

and cold, murky waters that lie black under the dying light.

Followed by warm gloom and the breathing of canine bodies,

curled by my back and feet.

Between the twilight and sleep.
