The Mirror and the Witness..
The Hope and the Fear..

I saw myself in the mirror today,
And I thought, "What a strange sight to see!"
A face that was old and haggard and gray,
A face that was full of worry and glee.
I said to the mirror, "Who are you?"
And the mirror replied, "I am you."
"But you're so old and haggard and gray,"
I said. "And I'm not."
"That's because you're looking at the past,"
The mirror said. "I'm looking at the present."
"But I don't want to see the past,"
I said. "I want to see the future."
"The future is not yet written,"
The mirror said. "But I can see it in your eyes."
"What do you see?" I asked.
"I see hope," the mirror said. "And I see fear."
"Hope?" I asked. "Why hope?"
"Because you know that the future is not set in stone,"
The mirror said. "You know that you can change it."
"And fear?" I asked.
"Because you know that the future is not yours alone,"
The mirror said. "You know that others can change it too."
I looked at the mirror for a long time,
And I thought about what it had said.
I thought about the hope and the fear in my eyes.
And I thought about the future.
I don't know what the future holds,
But I know that I can change it.
And I know that others can change it too.
So I'm not afraid of the future.
I'm excited about it.
Because I know that the future is unwritten.
And it's up to us to write it.
