All those nearest and those dearest
To my little heart
Are solidpeople of the earth,
Steady, sturdy, and smart.
They are grounded, and you can see it
In the color of their hair,
In the cool tones of their eyes,
And set of their stare.
The easy nature of their manner
Makes one right at home,
And the gentle hue of their lives
Ensures they're not alone.
Though I am from the same place,
And my life a similar shade,
I've had my own tones added.
I'm a little bit self-made.
I may not be as steady,
Nor have much coin saved,
But none who know me would deny
That I am strong and brave.
My outlook is much warmer,
For better or for worse.
I tend to see in ruddy shades,
Whether feeling sweet or terse.
You might say that I can see,
My whole world through rose lenses,
But this should not suggest to you
I'll overlook offenses.
For if you think youself superior
To any of those I love,
Or have the audacity to suggest
That they're not enough,
Then I can firmlyguarantee,
whether they're blood or not,
You will quickly come to find that
Unlike them, I burn hot.
For though I'm often quiet,
Should I hear ofone of mine defamed,
You will soon regret to learn
Why my hair is flame!
