The MakeUp Drawer

Just Like Mommy

By Margaret BrennanPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

THE MAKEUP DRAWER

I polished the nails on my fingers and toes.

I straightened my hair when I took out the bows.

*

A small rub of blush was applied to each cheek.

Did I hear a voice? Did I just hear mom speak?

*

The voice that I heard kept coming in flashes.

Ignoring it, I painted black stuff on my lashes.

*

Rich black mascara on the bottom and top!

Oh! There’s that voice saying I’d better stop!

*

But wait, I’m not done! With my hands on my hips,

I know what I need – bright red cream on my lips!

*

Just about finished. There’s a loud anguished cry –

Mom’s now in the room screaming “Why, oh my, why??”

*

She looked at the face of her four-year old child –

Then held out her arms and soon hugged me and smiled.
