The Majesty of the Iroko Tree

Birth of the Giant Tree

By RAYMOND OGWUPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Part I: Birth of the Giant

In a realm where earth and sky entwine,

Where whispers of the ancient spirits lie,

A seed was sown in the fertile loam,

Beneath the watchful, infinite dome.

Born of the forest's secret lore,

A tale as old as time, no more,

Yet ever-new in its mystic birth,

The Iroko sprang from the heart of earth.

Its roots delved deep, in search of grace,

Entwining with the ancient place,

Drawing strength from soil's embrace,

A giant destined to dominate space.

As sapling stretched towards the light,

Its leaves unfurled, a verdant sight,

It reached for stars, for moonlit beams,

In dreams of green, in endless dreams.

Part II: Guardianship and Growth

Through seasons' turn and tempests’ roar,

The Iroko grew, its spirit soared,

Guarding secrets of earth and sky,

A sentinel where shadows lie.

The rains bestowed their liquid gold,

The sun bestowed its warmth so bold,

Each element a gift bestowed,

To nurture growth, to break the mold.

Its bark, a shield, both rough and strong,

Withstood the trials, endured the throng,

Of winds that howled and waters wild,

The Iroko stood, nature’s child.

Through droughts and floods, it held its own,

A symbol of the forest’s throne,

Its branches whispered songs of old,

To those who dared to seek and hold.

Part III: The Heart of the Forest

Beneath its shade, life thrived and bloomed,

In its embrace, a world attuned,

To rhythms ancient, primal, pure,

A harmony of life's allure.

Birds nested high in canopy grand,

Insects danced to nature’s band,

Monkeys leaped from bough to bough,

The Iroko tree their sacred vow.

The forest floor, a tapestry,

Of roots and leaves in harmony,

Where shadows danced and light would play,

In the Iroko’s hallowed sway.

It stood as refuge, safe and sound,

For creatures small and secrets found,

A towering presence, wise and free,

The heart of ancient forestry.

Part IV: Songs and Spirits

Spirits whispered through its leaves,

In languages that none perceive,

Yet all could feel the sacred song,

That through the Iroko tree did throng.

Legends spun of its mighty form,

Of gods and ghosts and ancient norms,

In stories passed from mouth to ear,

The Iroko’s presence ever near.

Its wood, a vessel for the divine,

In carvings made with hands benign,

A totem of the earth’s great power,

A symbol of the primal hour.

Through rituals of sacred rites,

It stood a beacon in the nights,

Of times forgotten, myths untold,

The Iroko, a legend bold.

Part V: Endurance and Wisdom

Centuries came and centuries fled,

Empires rose and dreams were wed,

To earth's embrace and sky’s sweet kiss,

The Iroko bore the world’s abyss.

With wisdom etched in every ring,

A silent sage, a forest king,

It watched as ages passed it by,

A witness to the endless sky.

Its leaves would fall, yet roots remained,

A cycle eternal, unexplained,

A testament to nature’s force,

The Iroko’s ever-enduring course.

Men sought its shade, its wood, its lore,

They bowed before its timeless door,

To seek the wisdom held within,

The Iroko’s soul, where life begins.

Part VI: Modern Echoes

In modern times, its shadow cast,

A reminder of the forest’s past,

Amidst the noise of steel and stone,

The Iroko stands, a world alone.

Yet still it grows, its roots entwined,

With earth and time, with heart and mind,

A bridge between the old and new,

In every leaf, a story true.

Its branches reach towards the sky,

In silent prayer, in humble sigh,

A testament to nature’s grace,

The Iroko tree, in timeless space.

Part VII: The Legacy Lives On

As years roll by, its story spreads,

In whispered tales and ink that bled,

Through minds that seek to understand,

The Iroko’s place in this vast land.

Its seed is sown in hearts and dreams,

In visions of what life redeems,

A symbol of the strength to stand,

Against the tides, with steady hand.

Its legacy, a living flame,

Of nature’s power, wild and tame,

In every forest, every field,

The Iroko’s spirit, never healed.

So let us bow to this great tree,

A guardian of the wild and free,

In every leaf, in every bough,

The Iroko speaks, here and now.

Part VIII: Eternal Vigil

Through dawn and dusk, in twilight’s hue,

The Iroko stands, both old and new,

A beacon of the earth’s great might,

A symbol of the endless night.

In dreams, it speaks to those who hear,

Its ancient wisdom, ever near,

A guardian of life’s great lore,

The Iroko tree, forevermore.

Its tale is told in whispering wind,

In rustling leaves, in branches thinned,

Yet ever strong, it stands with grace,

A testament to nature’s face.

So let us honor, let us praise,

The Iroko tree in all its ways,

For in its shade, we find our peace,

A timeless journey, a sweet release.

Conclusion: The Iroko’s Embrace

And as we stand beneath its shade,

In awe of all that it has made,

We feel the earth, we touch the sky,

In the Iroko’s arms, we lie.

A tree of life, a tree of dreams,

Where time is still and silence gleams,

In every leaf, in every root,

The Iroko’s heart, our souls salute.
