The Magical Games
Please be wary of what you gamble with

Flyers hanging magically in the air everywhere you look
Advertising the best of the best, calling all magical beings,
Wizards, sorcerers, unicorns, fairies, come one, come all
This tournament will include the mightiest of us refereeing.
***
Begging you to attend as either a spectator or participant
As it is the celebration of the century, it is the Magical Games,
Register quickly but before you do, please read up on the rules
Tomorrow the flyers replaced with a list of contestants names.
***
What is the prize, you may very well ask, so listen closely
It is a very simple concept, the winner will be your downfall,
For every contestant that registers their name will gamble
With those very parts of themselves most precious to all.
***
Choose carefully, with your choice of what you’ll gamble
Because if you lose there is no gaining any of it back,
Will you choose to sacrifice one or all of your magical powers
Or will it be one of your magical tools you’ll need to attack?
***
There will be no exception, all challengers must make a choice
To throw into the ring something magical that will hurt to lose,
What will it be, your powers to make any chemical concoction
Or your magical bowl that feeds you, what will you choose?
***
Registration is now closed, the list of magical names compiled
Game day dawns and all the challengers have now arrived,
First battle is launched and oh what a most glorious surprise
The Banshee has beaten the Centaur, one heart now deprived.
***
We silently watched the Dragon be beaten senseless by a Druid
Who has confiscated the Dragon’s flames, they become his own,
Next up to the challenge will be between a Fairy and a Vampire
A hard challenge as beating a Vampire has never been known.
***
Finally the Magical Games begin to wind down, silence abounds
There is only one challenge to run, crowning one overall winner,
It will be between a powerful Minotaur and a many headed Hydra
After which the magical being besting all will be crowned at dinner.
***
Surprise, surprise, the last match has been won by the Hydra
Only because it has previously confiscated a Gryphon’s strength,
It used this strength to beat the Minotaur to a messy bloody pulp
As each of the Hydra’s heads were all on the same wavelength.
***
The winner of the Magical Games then becomes super strong
As it has won all the magical powers and tools of the defeated,
The winner waltzes around those who sit with their heads bowed
As they were warned to choose carefully before they competed.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
