Ladder To Paradise

Outmatching my expectations

I magically discovered a ladder, a ladder to nowhere

It’s truly possible or so I believed of my expectations,

I pondered deeply, do I have the necessary courage

To begin to climb, yes I’m deserving congratulations.

***

Rung after rung, I climb up towards I know not where

I feel trepidation and fear as my heart begins to race,

After another rung or two, I hold and glance around me

Convinced all I’ll find at the top is more open space.

***

I discover my determination and continue to climb

As I gaze upwards, all I see are fluffy white clouds,

Now I’m excited, surely there is more than empty space

There’s bound to be, or the ladder would not be allowed.

***

The surreal feeling of other worlds as I enter the divine

The airy cleanliness of the fluffy light misty blue sky,

I continue my trek onwards, upwards, rung upon rung

Climbing faster as I realise I will need to climb so high.

***

Finally, I view the top of the ladder, precariously leaning

What do you think — will it be bare sky or sheer paradise,

I’ll place a small wager that you have it all totally wrong

As I bet there will be bliss, a city of love, to be more concise.

***

At last, I touch the very last rung, higher than my dreams

And my head breaks cover so I can see, pure perfection,

A pristine glass castle surrounded by fields of blooms

And everywhere groups of wingless angels in all directions.

***

I venture further and the crowd stops, turns and smiles

As a few of those angels begin to meander towards me,

Tears pour from my eyes as I recognise every one of them

My soul mate, a lost child, my best friend and my family.

***

They lead me silently to a food covered pedestal table

And seat me on the mushrooms growing freely by its side,

Yes I’m crying, but my tears are of pure happiness and joy

Noticing everyone missing from my life, as they’d all died.

***

I stay for what seems like days but is only a few hours

As we fill our hearts with all our love, happiness and peace,

It’s time to wander back to that ladder leading me home

As I say my goodbyes now all my sorrow’s been released.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
