There’s a lonely cricket outside my window,

Its mates now lost to the beckoning fall.

Does it sing to the wind or does the wind blow

To carry its soul in the notes of its call?

<>

It sings alone as the summer retreats,

The world deaf as stone to its longing for light

But maybe the wind, in autumnal feats,

Yet honors its life in the depth of the night.

<>

Lo! Lonely cricket, your symphony was heard

By my own lonesome ears and given a word!

Sonnet

Congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉 I'm so glad I came across this poem, especially the last two lines. The smallest, sometimes most insignificant things can turn out to be the greatest things.

You added a whole knew dimension to the sounds of the cricket Who is it calling, lost love, forgotten memories. How the breath of wind is incorporated is haunting

I love the question you pose about whether the cricket sings to the wind or the wind carries its song. The volta into that final couplet is perfect. Beautiful work and congratulations on getting Top Story! (I'm catching up on everyone's posts today after being away for a few days.)

  • Back to say congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

Rommi. So effortlessly beautiful and sincere. So lovely in message too and positive. This is a stunning sonnet and great entry for the challenge. Not like my profane verses! lol Well done, Rommi, on writing this, the entry and the Top Story! thoroughly well deserved and love that image you've used!

I love how you’ve turned the cricket’s song into a shared moment of connection. A beautiful little symphony in words.

  • We all feel like this cricket at times....but we will find our place. Love him, Charles.

This tugs at my heart, loss at any time is such a cruel thing. Another beautiful bit of art in both a picture and a poem.
