The Little Things

what gets me through

It's the excitement of the new puppy when I walk downstairs,

the crinkle of a fresh bag of tortilla chips as I pull it open for a late night snack,

finding a fresh pot of coffee waiting in the kitchen,

3 a.m. McDonald's runs with my best friend,

painting furniture on the front porch with the last city skyline stencil left at Michael's (and I got it on sale),

the way my cat falls asleep curled up against my back,

the perfect song suggestion on my Discover Weekly playlist,

starting to write in a brand new composition book,

the smell of freshly-printed newspapers,

the hope on my mother's face as I say for the first time in weeks that I like my life right now

surreal poetry
