Hey! What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?
No specific reason.
If you’re not busy, would you want to come over?
We can listen to love songs and make homemade pizza.
And when a slow song comes on,
We’ll jokingly dance together,
Wrap each other in a sense of security and warmth we didn’t know we craved for a while.
I’ll lay my head on your chest as we quietly but not awkwardly rock back and forth,
Wondering if we’ve crossed a line.
Or instead, we’ll shyly laugh and turn the music off and put on face masks while picking a movie.
We can argue over watching a rom-com or a cheesy chick flick,
And settle over watching one of each to not disappoint each other.
We’ll eat our pizza and drink our wine
And peek at each during the dramatic love confessions.
We’ll notice at some point between eating and refilling glasses, we’ve ended up closer than we started
But not touching.
Trying to make sure we don’t cross that line.
And when the movie ends, I’ll offer you to stay the night
Only because you’ve been drinking, nothing else.
You’ll ask for a blanket for the couch,
I’ll hide my disappointment.
As we gently walk this tightrope, hoping for the other to slip up first.
To cross that line.
But we don’t.
I’ll grab pillows and a blanket, jealous that it’ll get to embrace you.
We’ll lay awake, wondering if it’s worth the risk to wake the other.
But we don’t.
We don’t cross that line.
So if you’re free,
Come walk the line with me.
