The Last Bonfire

The Last Flame

Orange and red climb up against the black,

It slips down some ways,

Before it climbs back up again,

But not as high as before.

This cycle will continue,

Until the flames are gone,

Leaving only glowing embers in its wake,

Before they too diminish.

After this fire,

There will be no more,

This will be the last,

For even the brightest flame,

Has trouble defending against the snow.

S'mores and firelit smiles will be at an end,

Screams after scary stories will take a break,

And songs played on a guitar,

Will have to happen somewhere else.

But soon the snow will come,

Inviting all to sled down white hills,

Enjoy a steaming cup of cocoa,

While laughing at each other's ugly sweaters.

So do not remain sad,

More joy is to come,

Say goodbye to the last flickers with a smile,

We will see them again next year.

Such a lovely blend of bittersweet and hopeful. You capture that shift from autumn warmth to winter joy so beautifully.

    Stunning work Rebecca!

  • Nice, hot cocoa, a fireplace, a sweater, and knit socks are perfect for winter.

  • Mmmm, I wish I could have a steaming cup of cocoa now, hehehe. Loved your beautiful poem!
