The Lantern in the Corner

A forgotten flame that still warms the heart

Bright winter snow

Power cuts and blankets

Rooms as cold as ice

* * *

A tiny lantern

From bygone days

Of grandparents I never knew

* * *

Through ornate stained glass

Bringing comfort and warmth

To an excited child

* * *

Warm glowing flame

Like never-ending summer

Beautiful and unique

* * *

There without question

Unnoticed by most

Invisibly part of our home

* * *

I never asked why

We should possess

That keepsake from the past

* * *

I vaguely remember

The corner it claimed

Making our house a home

* * *

Years later gone

Thrown out and forgotten

But warm memories linger on

* * *
