The Imprisoned Self

Faceless is my captor, holding me each day,

A sentence unsurvivable, life held at bay,

Powerless to stop the coming storm,

Being in the middle of it, the horrid norm,

Not innocent and not guilty, a man misunderstood,

Locked in this wretched hell, I'd escape if I could,

How I got here a mystery,

I barely remember the depth of the story,

One thing after another, looking back it's all so inconceivable,

Even after living it all, even I find it unbelievable,

Haunted by my nightmares,

Living through so many scares,

Living, loving, and doing a lot,

Still, with a wounded soul, from memories, I wish I forgot,

When will I escape,

Even if it means my soul you will take,

This prison of the mind,

Proving my conscience is unkind,

Reformed, I wish I was,

I'd put my pain on pause,

Only able to do better tomorrow,

And promise to let go of my sorrow,

When will I escape this prison without walls,

To lead a life with no more falls,

Why can I not forgive myself,

If only I could leave my transgressions on a shelf,

Then I could escape from this prison I live in,

But only when I forgive myself for all the sin,

When it's all said and done,

My place in the white room, even if I'm the only one,

My faceless captors will surround,

Then know my freedom, I will live unbound.

About the Creator

Writing has become more important as I live with cancer. It's a therapy, it's an escape, and it's a way to do something lasting that hopefully leaves an impression.
