Fake Smile

It hits harder when it's whispered

the truth, hiding behind smiles

That's the warning that is snickered

as they measure up your size

To see what you are made of

and how will you stand your ground

When push becomes a shove

where can your loyalties be found

I crept out of their vision

where the shadows are concealed

I tried to escape their prison

when the shit was getting real

And I saw behind the curtain

behind the bright white, shiny smiles

I denied them the coercion

saw right through the veiled disguise

And now, I've become the villain

seems I've got too much to tell

But, they found, I am resilient

it's time that they all face my hell

I'll draw them out into the open

reveal just who they really are

Say the truth that should be spoken

I'm not something they can discard

So, beware of the evil

shown in the image of kindness

They are the poison in the needle

hiding darkness in their smile

That eerie smiling turtle skull was a great choice for this poem. Your words convey a sense of malice hidden behind a surface level grin and a “kind” disposition.

I spent longer than I should've looking at this cover photo. That's true. Truth when whispered can hit harder. Especially when behind a smile. When push becomes a shove. In this line I can feel the malevolent spirit behind the face of the person you speak of. You denied the bright shiny smiles the coercion. I love how this line fits in so well to the rhyme of the curtain. The poem progress in its visceral layers. Speaking of a turn that was made, a turn that prospered the villain within. I like the warning there at the end. You have lived it, sadly, but at least you have something to tell as a warning. Fantastic work as always Kelli 🤗❤️
