The Harm Principle

A sonnet and a question: when will enough be enough?

How many bullets must run through the sieve?

Shot in haste, hatred, shot in apathy,

Catching, as they tumble, in children’s teeth,

Gathered, grief-borne tears form a tapestry.

They market it as freedom; ‘swing their fist,’

But forgot to stop where my nose began,

Fists reach much farther when gunpowder-kissed;

“I’m begging you, care,” —mother to lawman.

How many bullets for a young girl’s life?

When will the false idol be satisfied?

Even though it’s tempting, don’t close your eyes,

Let pain in, bravely, then let actions guide.

Look at, not away, fight the apathy,

Speak for those silenced for eternity.

    I saw a young girl carrying a sign at a protest that said, 'If I die in a school shooting, please leave my body on the steps of Congress'. Thank you for this one. We need to find a way to solve this...
