We all focus on what the grievers are going through,
how they're feeling,
but have we ever stopped
to think about the grieved?
Do the ones we grieve
also grieve the ones they left?
Do they feel us
the way we feel them?
Do they look for a simple sign
to know that we're thinking of them?
When it rains,
are they missing us?
When the sun shines,
are they having a good day?
Do they wear necklaces
made from their halos
that hold our pictures?
Do they sit with whatever God they believe in
and beg to go home?
I never thought about it
until I started writing this,
and I wish I could get answers.
I wish I could know
if you think about us
the way we all think about you.
You would tell us
not to sit too long in our grief,
and to live each day for you.
So I will send my thoughts
to wherever you are,
and hope that you're not missing us too much—
that you are surrounded
by all those who came before you,
all those you have missed—
and that you are living a life
you're excited to tell us all about
when we meet again.
