THE GEOMETRY OF DUSK

by Helene Bowen

Triangles of lavender, purples, indigo and green rise up

on the verticals of rectangles and squares of the city

and the flowing squares of the suburbs.

High above, the elliptical arcs of bright orange, magenta and purple,

change into shades of burnt umber and fall into the depths

of the earth below, like a window shade being drawn.

At ground level are the undulating lights of red and white,

sometimes swarming chaotically, now and again,

stopping at the command of the traffic lights.

With the disappearance of the fantastic light show,

the sky becomes darkened

with night clouds that soon part

to expose the twinkling dots

of eyes in the sky.
