An image flickers across my thoughts
Of you in that fiery red dress
A memory seared into my cerebral cortex
The day you branded me with impossible dreams
And burned my heart with an unforgettable scar
One I thought would never heal
-
But now, as I stare into the dying flame
I feel cause for alarm
The fire that once raged
Has spread too thin
-
I’ve wondered too far from the source
Left with just a whisp of your voice
Not enough to keep your fire alive
-
I fear the burning cold of your absence
And focus, magnifying my thoughts of you
The sound of your laugh, once the driest of my tinder
Fails to ignite like the past
Instead, it burns fast like lint
I fan the embers
Searching for the scent of your hair
Or the touch of skin
To set my heart ablaze
But nothing works
Your smile fades
Lost in a smoky haze
Charred to ash
