The FarmOwl Barnaby

And keeping up with his farmer family Jones

By Jessica SchuelerPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

There is this old farm house that sits by a crick, addressed as the Jones's that label sure has great stick. I'm sure the house would have fell in by now if it hadn't been made of solid brick.

So across the long yard was a great open field, it even has the old machinery they used for collecting the farmers yield.

Adjacent to the old house , sat a well kept...unusual kind of barn, but first for those who are curious , I strike caution and...must certainly warn!

There is a rumor of a great white owl, and it's been there so long, legend has it...it knows how to howl.

Story has it...there was a farm dog and he'd hide in this barn because he was old, and quite lazy. Now listen up folks you might think I'm crazy.

They say this dog would randomly bark and howl a bit, he'd make this farmer believe he worked the field and how he really stayed on top of it.

Now there is this owl named Barnaby that loved to sit in the open loft window, and watch the field. As it turns out he was giving that lazy dog everything he preyed on and ever killed.

You see...that owl loved to protect, and naturally hunt his prey. But unfortunately, he seen his hunts as intruders, and wouldn't eat them that way.

Now as for that lazy dog, he might get a scold or an occasional lick but, he knows killing an intruder has got to be worth triple the trick!

The owl perches daily, under him the old dog hides. It doesn't take long before the dog fears the farmer coming , and so soon he confides.

The owl becomes pals with his new friend old lazy dog. He knows his routine, he's been watching and keeping a detailed log.

The owl plans an exchange with his pal, a kill for a treat, the dog feels lucky, since he will have two he gets to eat.

Set and lazy soon the dog sleeps he begins to snore. All he has to do is remember to periodically bark............................ he's done this before.

So in his sleep, he'd let out an occasional growl, bark, or long howl. Until one day he went silent, and his face become fixed with a permanent scrowl.

Now that the dog has passed. Everything the owl planned and did up to this point didn't matter. Panic stricken with thoughts of wwhhooo's and whats to much, it all becomes chatter! What happened to the dog was unfortunate, his result of being lazy and getting fatter. Never mind the owls plan...it's all just to much blatter.

So the owl realized he was starting to get hungry a bit, he could hear the farmer yelling, he'll soon throw a fit!

So the owl did what any wise would, he'd drop off his kill at the door, then bark and howl as loud as he could!

Luckily for the owl, this went on for a while, for the man a walk to the barn seemed like a mile.

Eventually the man ceased to exist, the owl seen the pattern with every meal missed.

Now the owl is forced to eat only what he prey, hoping that a new plow pushes greens into May. Longing for a new farmer, you can actually still hear him howling today!
