The Faithful Wife
not so happily ever after

Each week she takes a different man
into her bed, while her husband
haunts the local rum bars all night,
carousing with friends and flirting with women.
.
---- With closed eyes, she sends out her summons.
---- Come, take me, and do what you will!
---- Her secret lover obliges,
---- attending to her every want and need.
.
---- As her faithless mind and heart both race,
---- hands trace the curves of her body,
---- by proxy, drawing each response
---- like a conductor guiding his symphony.
.
---- With the crescendo, she cries aloud,
---- but not a name, for none is known
---- for the dissipating phantom
---- that has possessed her thoughts and stirred her passions.
.
Smelling of smoke and unfulfilled dreams,
her husband will stagger back home
to clumsily rouse her from sleep.
Faithfully, she will receive him.
.
