The Defiant

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

All of the grim facts seem to conspire

Against this mad impulse, to walk alone

Through fresh snow and wind, a frozen wire

To pay young interest on an old loan

Is this delirium, or bold courage?

The body warns the mind to seek shelter;

Stubborn plans refuse to get the message

Memory and desire do welter

Warm and safe, I will yearn for many things

That only the frozen world can provide

Along with it, this venture danger brings

But cozy cowards might starve where they hide

For coffee, toilet paper, bread and eggs

I'll drain this frosty walk's cup to the dregs

Ekphrastic
