The Culling Of Her Inner Circle

As she practices self love

She has culled her circle of friends

As she prefers the gift of intimacy,

Time for one on one true friendship

Offering them her love legitimacy.

***

She has felt pain and heartbreak

From those she has now culled,

Practicing more self love, wisely

Gone but the hurts not yet dulled.

***

Her little girl has fallen asleep inside

In an effort to escape, dull the pain,

She dreams of unicorns running free

Taking a time out to keep her sane.

***

She feels the fires that are burning

Left from the dragons as they flee,

On wings of strength, gliding high

Disappointed she no longer believes.

***

I watch her closely as she sits quietly

Note the beautiful madness in her eyes,

She’ll work that pain, that heartbreak

Encouraging the unicorns to fly high.

***

I question her heart, can she still love

Will she shy away if intimacy forms,

She calmly states, “I’ve nothing left

But raging waters and midnight storms.”

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
