The Concrete Chair

Plastic Reality

Adroit affections

to construct a false tether

Doesn't think you'll test it.

As someone who has always been involved with horses, I can say that this photo is the goal of all horse trainers.

To be able to tie a horse to anything and have it not try to escape it is a great convenience if nothing else. The truth is that a frightened horse can break just about anything, so after we condition them to wear halters and lead ropes, we teach them to be tethered to something solid that we hope they won't break.

As time goes by, they accept the restraints as a normal interaction with people because if we are successful trainers, we have conditioned them to believe that being tethered and being ridden are good things. We reward them for allowing it, and by doing that, we make them think that on some level it was their idea. Studies have shown that horses are more intelligent than dogs, so when you see a horse tied to a Plastic chair it's not because the horse is stupid. It's because the horse was taught and conditioned to believe that the plastic chair is solid, and that he can't break away from it. He has no reason to test it because he's already been taught by humans, that he trusts, that the chair is inescapable. But he's OK with that, because he's been conditioned to believe that captivity is a good thing. And I mean, I ride and train dressage, so I teach horses to be ballet dancers- talk about control! But I've always taken their mental health seriously to inprove their quality of life.

And as his captor, we make all of his decisions for him. We decide where he lives, whether he lives inside or outside, we decide where he eats and what, we decide how much water he has access to, we decide whether he is with other horses or not, and then we decide what he's gonna do for the rest of his captive life. Some horses have great lives because we allow them to live like they were meant to live. Other horses have horrible lives because we've removed them completely from the way they would normally live. They're herd animals and we remove them from the herd, but they don't know any different because we have conditioned them to believe that that is the only life available to them.

So if we can make a 1,000 horse ( with a brain the size of a grapefruit and a still- preserved flight or fight instinct ) believe that a plastic chair is a mighty inescapable hitching post, think of what can be done to a person.

Think of what can be done to a person.

The mind is the doorway to our heart and soul, and it is there that warfare is waged every day.

It is there that we can be conditioned to believe that the plastic chair is a heavy concrete chair.

In the name of "love".

Ill take that plastic chair.

And give you a set of wings.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

So many lessons in this! Food for thought :)

  • I love This reflection it explores for me the psychological conditioning of both horses and humans, using the example of a horse being tethered to a plastic chair. It emphasizes the power of conditioning—how trust and control can make the horse believe in the strength of the tether, just as humans can be conditioned to accept limitations that aren't truly insurmountable. The piece connects this idea to human experience, urging us to reject fear and embrace the power of the mind, offering an inspiring perspective on freedom and strength.
