The Colours Beneath

A poem about growth, depth, and what we keep hidden.

I'm a darkened sea

Of aquamarine.

There's great depth to me,

More to be seen.

The surface, glistens.

So clear it seems.

But look a bit harder,

Below that there's greens.

In those reside

My thoughts for others.

Concern and care,

And the tears for my lovers.

Swirling, churning,

Emotive tide.

But there's more below,

Come take a dive.

Down here is deeper,

An indigo scene.

It's my energy, my passions

Caught up in a dream.

They're full of excitement,

It's a joyful landscape.

But sometimes they're doubtful,

Sometimes they escape.

To the place right below,

Where no diver's been.

The place I keep hidden,

That no one has seen.

Turn your nose down,

And look what's below.

Gather your courage,

To the darkness we go!

Peek into it slowly,

There's no turning back.

At first it seems scary,

It's really quite black.

But drift on down there,

You're not going to drown.

Hold onto your breath,

And start looking around.

In here you'll find

It's just me alone.

Thinking and wondering,

Hoping I've grown.

Working through boxes,

Of old memories.

Some of them haunted,

Some filled with glee.

But each so important,

Stack them carefully.

For these are the things

That are making up me.

I'm building a castle

With every bright box.

I'm stacking them up,

Tall building blocks.

Soon they will reach

The top of the waves.

And I'll climb up to sunshine,

Leave behind all the greys.

Grab onto my hand

And follow me now.

We're swimming up quickly,

Finding the ground.

Gaze back at the ocean,

Those layers of me.

And show me your colours,

I can't wait to see.
