The Colors of ME

Color is Pride: True Colors

By Deshone HallPublished 5 years ago 3 min read
In this poem I connect my emotions, my spirituality and identity to colors.

The Colors of ME

Red is the united blood of my ancestors from Africa and America that fought for liberty and equality. While green represents the land of my people and the gifts of vegetation from the Earth for nourishment.

I visualize my fore fathers prominent Kings and Queens draped in gold representing royalty. How the silver shines as the chains cling to arms and legs of my ancestors who were in bondage for centuries.

The blue sky symbolizes a clear day and little chance of rain but to me it’s what makes the Blues the Blues, it depicts humanities’ pains, sorrows, failures and fears.

White as snow, pure and clean with no part of any other color. White is set aside but easily stained by life consequences, choices and circumstances. White you’re not even in the spectrum of the rainbow.

Black as tar, unclean and dark, a combination of a mixture of all colors, not easily stained but it fades after every wash, the circumstances and conditions of my peace.

My brown skin identifies me physically but, it does not define my inner dreams, ambitions, and intellect. My brown skin hinders me, it brings me to conscious and subconscious struggles.

When I indulge in purple I feel royalty, leadership, achievement and triumphs. My violet is vibrant it is luxury, power and ambition. The hue of red and blue combined, blood and sky mix to bring peace, wealth, wisdom and creativity. My purple is magic and my independence, it helps me project myself to the world. Lavender units the calmness of blue and the fire of red to elevate the mind, body and soul and bring total spirituality.

I am youthful and playful in my pink, My pink is my innocence, my damaged parts that I try to protect, my mind, my body, my heart. I cheer in my pink and celebrate in my pink, I have also been hurt and embarrassed in my pink.

Yellow means slow down, it is my warning sign, it stimulates and revitalizes my brain. I am spontaneous in yellow, I feel warm and energetic. Yellow brings me hope, laughter and optimism. Yellow is bright, it is sunshine and a source of light to the Earth.

Grey areas mixed with black and white, lies and truths. Grey they tell me is confusing, it’s in the middle, and you need to pick a side. Grey is really a neutral balance. When they say I’m lost and depressed in my grey area, they say I’m dull absent of color. In my grey area I morn loved ones and repent my sins, it is the color of ash after the flames have dwindled, the smoke after the fire descends where water and fire mix. My grey is my energy, it is my hidden talents, strengths and thoughts which brings me to maturity.

Colors is pride, the rainbow is a symbol of God’s promise, and it is hope for humanity and culture. The rainbow is a perfect arc that calms the sky after a rainstorm. The rainbow is the everlasting covenant between God and living organisms on Earth.

The rainbow is the different colors in my life, it is my happiness, my sadness, my fears and my struggles. My rainbow it is meant to create excitement in the atmosphere. Rainbows symbolize diversity and it represents inclusivity. The arc of the rainbow embraces love and friendship. I aim to be a double rainbow, my first arc transforming my mind to be open to others’ ideas and perspectives in the natural world. The second arc is my spirituality, my connection to God and humanity. Colors of ME.
