The Colors of Humanity

An Original Poem by: Alyssa Sison Guerrero

There are always flowers for those who want to see them. -Henry Matisse (And Mama Nature)

Sage is the color that soothes me

Cerulean cornflower is the color that inspires me

While purples, periwinkles,

Lavender and lilacs

Are the hues within me

Muted

Deep

Dusted

Bright

Sometimes heathered

Other times saturated

Yet always

A soft heart

Carnation is the color of my mother and her radiating spirit

With dusky rose and light mauve diamonds glistening in her halo

The darkest forest mixed with army green is my father

With streaks of candy apple and sea foam in between

My love is the color of the ocean and seas

Like the eternal depths of his eyes and love

His soul

Flickering specs of slate and emerald

Blues and bright turquoise

With flashes of midnight and dark indigo that mirror the depths of my healing and stormy amaranthine

Deep crimson is the color of humanity’s artery

Though at times it is bleeding bright scarlett

Gunmetal steel grey is the color of our fixed and stubborn fear

And crusted charcoal the color of those moments trudging with turmoil and deepest despair

But I also believe in the ochres

The pale salmon

The terracotta of our strength and resilience

The azure of our courage and bravery

The soft orchid of our compassion

The sapphire depths of our abilities and potential

And the tangerine twist that can come from

A splash of goldenrod

That can break down

The dried pigment walls of rust and brick

Many ask how can one be two colors at once?

And to that my reply will always be

Because like me

Humanity

Is not just one stick of wax out of the box

I

We

Are a hologram

A mosaic

A crystal hanging in this room called life

And crystals carry all the colors

What matters is at what angle

And what intensity

You choose to embrace the light

And allow it to shine through
