The City River

A poem

Here at the city river side

The breeze so cool in the noon sun

Bringing with it an odor from the murky waters

The scavenger birds and dogs

Devouring greedily at the disposed domestic waste

Trashing some of it into the flow

Yet on and on the river goes

I'm amazed at that

Despite the waste and trash thrown at it

The river never pauses,

nor does it appear to notice

But goes on and on

The promise of the sea, maybe

and the slope of the land

aiding its determination

Every waking moment

never letting go of its purpose …
