The Car and the Cougar

A poem about a time I passed by a cougar on the side of the road.

By Madison "Maddy" NewtonPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

A snow bank?

No, a tan felled branch.

No–neither of those.

Two bright spheres catch the gleam of my headlights

and they follow the spin of the tires like amber saucers.

A long neck, round ears, timid stance,

maybe a deer?

But those limbs–too muscular, and no hooves!

The grass brushes against its yellowed fur,

tracing lines through its thick coat.

It blends in so well, but my gut assures me

it was a mountain lion, tired from winter, wandering

the quiet of back country roads.

Oh now I'm jealous. I've never been lucky enough to see a cougar and really, really want that to happen. Congratulations on a major 'bucket-list' tick!
