The Candy Jar

sweet toxicity

By Sarah LennPublished about a year ago 1 min read

there are still moments

when my thoughts drift towards you

and I am compelled to direct them back

onto the correct track

the one where you and I don't talk

and it must remain that way

I slap my thought hand away from

the candy jar

because I know what resides there

might taste sweet for a moment

might look bright and inviting

might even linger on the tongue

and give me a sugar high

but is slow, seeping poison

disguised as a treat

no matter what wrapper of the day

you've packaged it in

or what nuance of friendship flavor

you've stirred into it

-you are toxic to me

eventually, my thoughts will catch up

to my will

~~~
(my heart knows better than to speak)
    Wow, excellent symbolism in this poem. This is also very relatable as well.
