The Blank Page

What do you write on a blank page? What words are worthy?

The Blank Page

What do you write

On a blank page?

What words are worthy of

That creamy, luxurious paper?

What words are good enough

To flow from that fancy pen?

Words of love?

“How do I love thee?”

Words that wrench

Those complicated, tangled emotions

From my heart

To trap them

Here on this

Blank Page?

Words of hate?

Words that draw

The black anger

From deep within my soul

And lay them bare

For all the world to see

Here on this

Blank Page?

Words of hope?

Words that entice

That tender, trembling hope

That beats within my breast -

Afraid to stay,

Afraid to fly free -

To leave its tiny flutterings,

Exposed and unprotected,

Here on this

Blank Page?

What words have I

That are worthy

Of this

Blank Page?

Perhaps,

Rather than taking a chance

Of falling short

Of the excellence deserved

By this

Blank Page,

I shall keep

My flawed, imperfect words

To myself.

And leave

This Blank Page

Blank.
