The Battle Lines Have Been Drawn

Backfiring on the depravity that threw down the sword

She has a love of life that rivals no other,

Guarded by her spirits that whisper strength into her soul,

Disrespect is just a smile away from a forever kiss of death,

A painful past healed after it had taken its devastating toll.

******

She tried, she gave it all she had to turn betrayal into trust,

But rivers of evil run deep and she almost lost the swim,

For every falsehood tuned upon her ears, her heart hiccuped,

Why? She asked of the depravity who tried to break her on a whim.

******

She understands now that she’s not deserving of the neglect,

She has no time for a boy-child of pretence,

Age has withered the destruction that once shattered her,

And her eyes opened to the language of crude offence.

******

Where once she was whipped by the master of manipulation,

Now, she can laugh at the insanity of every plea,

At his request, she led the lost from the mainstream pathways,

And adventured off-grid where her heart was set free.

******

Closure gained from the inherent spite that waters his veins,

The truth of such ugliness televised for the entire world to see,

Pity washes her eyes to a truth covertly hidden before,

Strength showing in the ability to let what will be, just be!

******

The valleys of built up walls can freely crumble at last,

Authenticity can be lived outside of the prison to date,

The bars and chains untangled as the truth was shown,

To shower upon her shoulders the wisdom of fate.

******

She was made for more than that web that’s always held her back,

She’s risen above the hate disguised as affection from one with a blackened heart,

Bruised but not broken, her walk of shame goes undeterred,

And the door silently closes on the impossible dream destined to fall apart.

******

Her walk of life has been written of one worthy of her sacrifice,

No longer asking her to bend to a lower level in shame,

She can stand tall and bow out of the stoop he has always demanded,

And she can take back, with pride, her forfeited name.

******

She’s deaf to the defeated, the victim of a life totally wasted,

That grandiose storytelling of inauthenticity, uncouthly shadowed,

Who cowers when the sun shines and withers within the rain,

As the two are of different ends of the spectrum, never to be juxtaposed.

******

She has finally come into her own,

Stood her ground and cannot be defeated,

Wise beyond the tears that he once extorted as his self-declared right,

Warding her refusal to allow those traumatic years to ever be repeated.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

The imagery in this poem is breathtaking. The way you describe her journey from pain to empowerment is truly moving. Your words are a testament to the power of the human spirit.

This is pure power! A fierce, triumphant march from heartbreak to healing—standing tall, owning her worth, and leaving the nonsense behind. She’s unstoppable, and I’m here cheering her on!
