That Last December

A Villanelle

By Stephanie HoogstadPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

I held you tightly that last December

I did not release you the entire day

I will always love you, please remember

*

You seemed okay that previous September

You jumped and ran and played away

I held you tightly that last December

*

You faded quickly by that November

Trying, for me, to keep the illness at bay

I will always love you, please remember

*

Your fire faded to a smoldering ember

And still I begged you, pleaded you to stay

I held you tightly that last December

*

My heart, your absence did dismember

Putting every inch of it on full display

I will always love you, please remember

*

That day, I lost my dearest family member

What more is there for me to say?

I held you tightly that last December

I will always love you, please…remember

So sad, but beautifully written... the picture is so sweet... Your 'puppy' reminds me of my smiling, silver-haired 'gentleman'.
